Of course it’s more likely to happen today than the 1940s, if you indeed look at the issue through that mindset. Lynchings, particularly public/spectacle lynchings, boomed in the 1900s-1910s, but the international media’s response to the lynching of Jesse Washington in 1916 suddenly gave authorities reason to try and stamp out the practice.

I’d also like to address the use of the phrases “throughout history” and “historically” in these tweets. Clearly, this man has never actually read a historical text on the practice of lynching. Up until the mid 1870s, lynchings had targeted victims based on their political views and/or personal feuds. It wasn’t until after the old Democrats regained some power in the South that the focus turned to black men.

But really, what upsets me most about this is that we are comparing the shooting of an unarmed black man to the horrific torture that lynching victims endured. I refer back to Jesse Washington, and if you have the stomach for it, I’d ask you to read the wikipedia article on his lynching. And, keep in mind, that article is much less graphic that the historical accounts of the event. Not inaccurate, just skimming over some of details.

With all that being said, I urge you to actually research and read about subjects like lynching and mob violence before you go around spewing “facts”. The victims deserve more respect than that.
